M104 Tensioner Variants

Is it advised, suggested or even practically possible to replace the older style belt tensioner on a 2.8 litre M104 engine with the newer style one with the internal dampener?

The newer one looks a lot easier to work with than the older one, is this really the case?

I had my question answered by my indy - they said the bolt holes won't line up properly and I'd have to switch out other components also in order to fit the newer style tensioner.
