It's easy, Just grab it and pull HARD.

I have ofttimes found the Crescent hammer to be a valuable tool. That and the sledge wrench . . . .

When you pull it off, brace yourself so you don't hit yourself or anything else.
 Pull it firmly towards the driver side. After that's off, you'll see the screws that need to be removed to take the base off.
