Rearview mirror repair - old style - unsuccessful fix

My flip button on the mirror in my 560SL was broken, loose and rattling a bit inside and not changing the mirror's angle for night driving. I have an old one from a 450SE that looked similar, so thought I'd try and practise taking it apart first.
It looks like the trim piece around the edge of the glass should come off, but no amount of prying from the back worked. So I tried a heat gun, on low setting, to soften up the plastic. When very warm, you can push back the edge from the front of the glass, carefully insert a plastic wedge (I used a protractor corner), and the glass will pop right out from the front after one side is released.
The first and second picture show the old style ball retaining socket, all steel and hefty plastic parts. It has a screw on the outside back that can be tightened too, in case the ball is loose, without disassembling the housing.
The SL design is very different. There is no ball socket tightening screw, just a retaining screw that fastens the ball to the arm, only visible from inside. Also, the flip lever mechanism is a cheap plastic piece, with what I think was a thin plastic membrane holding the lever to the rest of the adjusting 'plate'.
Pics 3 and 4 show the SL mirror adjusting piece, and how I attempted to re-attach them with flexible glue. It didn't work though, so I guess this is good to know for someone else.
The last picture shows what did work, sort of. The steel rod was originally in the lower holes in the casing. I couldn't see how it functioned at all, and thought it might be in there for reinforcement? I dunno, but to keep the piece from moving too far out, and riding off the pivot point on the lever section (the original problem), I re-drilled the holes and moved it up about 3/16" and inserted a couple of foam pieces to snug it up.
Reassembled and back in the car, it works, but the angle isn't exactly right. Maybe there was a missing piece in there after all?
Well, I hope this helps explain how the mirror glass can be taken out, and what not to bother with if such a repair is tried....I bought a replacement mirror from a fellow forum member, in the end, which I hope will work properly..
