Angry hesitation when accelerating??

Hello I am new and was wondering if anyone could solve this mystery!! So i have a 1987 190E 2.3 16valve that sat for 4 years and now I am fixing it up. When i press on the gas to go there is a hesitation before it starts going, and sometimes it will hesitate and then suddenly speed off like a scared rabbit......The guy i have doing all the work on it is puzzeled and can't figure out where the hesitation is coming from, and we can't find any books or information on this particulary car, i have the 184-88 2.3 book but this car is different and all the parts are different. If anyone has any insight please let me know, also the car did die once at a stop sign, but hasn't done it since, and also the accelerater cable clip broke so the cable was detatched but its put back together now, so perhaps its not adjusted right?? or bad sensors?? HELP!
