leaking head gasket on a C280 - need advice

C280 - 1996 - 125K

The head gasket has been leaking for at least 25-35K. The leak is small - i really don't notice a dip in the oil level. My question is should i just keep driving it until it gets worse or go ahead and replace it as a preventative measure to prevent further damage.
My independent mechanic is quoting my about 1K for the repair.

thanks in advance

Have you done a compression test?
Try retorking the head if its only a small oil leak.

C280 Leaking Head Gasket

I would suggest that you conduct a search on this website for C280 head gaskets. You will find that this is one of the "issues" for this model.

Botton line is that if you can stand the leaking oil on your garage floor or driveway(leak is an external issue only), keep driving it. Retorquing the head will have little to no effect on the amount of leaking oil. The replacement gasket has been upgraded and once it has been renewed, it should not reoccur.

With that kind of mileage you may want to consider other items while the head is off ( valve seals, guides, etc. ).
But then again, easy for me to say, it's not my money.

Run the car until the leak gets bad.

And you'll know what bad is when you see it.

It let mine go for as long as I could stand it, and oil was literally pooling on my garage floor, the undercarriage of the car was covered in oil, and the engine would smoke when I shut it off due to oil leaking on the exhaust manifold.

$1,000 is a helluva good price for the head gasket, but you ought to add $300 or so to have the head sent out for straightness and have new valve guides and seals installed.

update

Just revisiting this old thread.

I now have 225k on the C280 and never fixed the headgasket. Amazingly it doesn't leak anymore. Even when it did leak, i never had to add oil.

She is still going strong and I plan on driving her into the ground.

Also still on the original tranny.
