Time for Steering Box R&R ? / 190E
My 84 190E w/ 166,000 miles has some bizarre knocking only on left hand turns. Just the slightest fraction of a degree turn of the wheel to make lefts will get a knocking over small bumps.
New ball joints, wheel bearings, idler arm bush, all links look tight, caliper tight, struts changed some time ago, bushings/sawy bar and control arm look good. I have traced it back to the steering box. It is mounted solidly but the arm has some play. Do these things go bad often? Strange that only lefts draw a noise. Can I tighten something up on it or add some 'marvel mystery lube'? Any thoughts folks?

The steering box is adjustable. There is a locknut and adjusting screw on the top of the steering box. Loosen the locknut and turn the screw counterclockwise to remove the slack. I would suggest you be patient and tighten it in small intervals, the test drive it. You don't want the steering to bind on you by overtightening it. Have fun.
