Yet another "clunk" thread

Yes, I know. It's been discussed a thousand times before -- I read them all. But this one is different. Really!

'97 S420, 87k miles. Hearing a clunk in the left rear at low speed (< 25mph), only when the suspension unloads, like when the rear wheel drops down a small bump or when the front wheels enter a dip. The car has recently had new Bilstein HD shocks & sway bar links front & rear -- no difference.

Anyone want to take a stab at it?

If you have conventional coil springs at the rear, I would look to see if one is broken ?

Check your parking brake for internal worn parts. I had a similar clunk on the right rear. Drove me nuts for the longest time.

Found it!

Well, I did the "4 Ps" under the car for the better part on an hour and didn't find anything (except that the front seal on my diff is leaking ). So I started expanding my search a bit and that's when I made a startling discovery. My battery had worked its way loose from its mount and was rattling around in the left rear fender well! So I shoved it back into the mount and tightened the bolt. All is good now! Thanks again to all who offered suggestions
