W126/M103 idler arm refurb
I'm ready to change the idler arm bushings in my 91 300SE. It sure looks like one of the exhaust down pipes will keep the big bolt from coming out. AFAIK the exhaust system has never been replaced. Can someone who's done this job on this chassis and engine combination confirm that the bolt can be extracted without futzing with the exhaust manifold?
If I can't get the bolt out, is it safe to drive the car with a retightened bolt? It won't all fall apart if I retorque it to 180Nm? Thanks, Sixto 91 300SE |

The exhaust system must be removed to remove the bolt, unless you cut the head of the bolt off! Have seen many with the bolt up-side down, BUT I wouldn't do that myself. Try spraying a rust lube like wd-40 on the bolts where they go thru the exhaust pipes. Make sure to use new bolts with anti-sieze compound.
