Difference between 86 5speed Motor & 88 Auto Motor?

I am about to pull the 2.3L motor out of my 86 190e w\5speed with about 170k on it. I bought an 88 190e w\auto car with 105k 2.3L that runs like a clock and no noises, for a donor and to canabilize.

My question is there appears to be differences between the two engines. Single and dual row timing chains, probably two different flywheels etc.

Mechanically, what engine parts are not interchangeable? Besides changing flywheels to take advantage of the 5 speed setup, do I have to change the oil pan and pickup tube? Can I use the 86 dual exhaust manifold on the 88 motor, the intake\KE-Jetronic setup from the 86? What year clutch assembly should I order?

What other nuances can I expect? I want to set this car up to squeeze as much economy out of it, within reason.

In another forum, it was mentioned that I should pull all of the ignition parts & engine wiring harness from the 88 tho make this fly.

Any other tips or experiences that I can glean from readers would greatly be appreciated. I want to set this car up to maximize its economy, within reason. I am at the point of buying gaskets, clutch package and the necessary new parts to make this swap work.

The 86 190e is one of the best designed and balanced cars I've ever had. As a hobby car I am willing to spend the time to do it right

The 1988 motor will work & fit w/o too much trouble.
The 1988 motor requires a HIGHER octane fuel due to higher compression.
The 1988 motor will require instlation of a pilot bearing for the manual trans.
You must use the flywheel from the 1986 car & the correct clutch for that car.
You can use the distributor & ignition system from the 1986 motor in the 1988 motor w/o any problem.

The oil pans are the same.

Difference between 86 5speed Motor & 88 Auto Motor?

Both engines are the 2.3L 4 cylinder.

Will the dual exhaust manifold from 86 fit the 88 2.3L motor? The exhaust is almost new on the 86 patient.

Will the 86 intake manifold\throttle body match the 88 head?

I put a new FEBI water pump on the 86 engine, will that swap over to the 88 engine.

In reading everything I can find on both cars, it appears these things should swap.

What brand Clutch, Pressure Plate, throw-out bearing & Pilot bearing setup do you recommend? Sachs?

One more question ? is the ECU module different on the 88 than the 86?

Again, thanks M.B.DOC for the heads up – I’m ready to purchase what I need from German Imported Parts
