I had a spare few hours to kill today, and didn't feel like getting dirty or sweated up, so I replaced the broken washer pump on my 380SE with a good used one, found in the trunk of my SL in a box. It has VW markings on it, and a different plug, so that might be a good source if you need one.
There was the old one in there too, a genuine MB, so I tested it and it didn't work. I figured I'd see if it could be saved, or at least I wanted to find out why.
The black case has a join line, and after some struggling and careful prying, it comes apart in 2 pieces. Once apart, I could see the lower shaft had rusted to the steel casing, preventing the little 'paddle' from spinning.A pair of pliers and some persuasion got the shaft/armature out, which I cleaned up on the fine wire wheel. I reamed the hole out with a welding tip cleaner, a dab of oil, re-assembled and it now works the very best! I'll put it back in the SL and keep the other VW pump for a spare.
I found the washer level sender grommet a very sloppy fit in the bottle. I replaced it with one of the small grommets I always save from my old oil filters (m116, m117 engines). Works perfectly!
