e420 differential swap
I am looking to swap out the differential on my e420 (124) w/o ASR to a lower ratio. I was wondering if a differential from a 1992 500sel will work. Did all 500 SEL's Have ASR?? If so could I just swap out the internals? Thanks for the help, Dan

I believe all 500s had ASR from 1992, and I don't think the parts interchange, ASR or no ASR, but the EPC should provide the answer with certainty. In any case it's a lot of work to go from a 2.24 to a 2.65.

There used to be a great post detailing that exact job. A search might find it, but I think he deleted it for some reason.

Thanks for the replies, yes I too have read those posts on the diff swap. My car doesnt have ASR so I need to find a diff W/O ASR or if possible swap the guts . I guess I'll try to find one W/O ASR.

There are some 140 bodies that interchange with the 124 but not all do, and I believe the 500s do not. I think an early, pre-95 420 140 body would be a good choice, they are 2.82s, same as a 500E, and few had ASR.
