1992 300E 4 matic possible buy?

I am looking at a 1992 300E 4 matic with 160,000 miles, the only problem is that the transmition will not go into reverse. He said it drives great just no reverse, and he wants $1000.00 firm. My question is, do you think this a easy fix or is the whole trany on the way out? The car looks like it is in good shape, 2 new tires, new stereo. Thanks for all of your help. Also how much would a rebuilt trany cost me?

Depends....

Go to the dealer or do it yourself?

You can get rebuilts online for around $1300-1500

Double to triple that for a indy or dealer job.

Not a bad deal on the car, but not a great deal either.

A 160k mile 4 matic with a bad transmission would have to be in absolutely terrific cosmetic condition to have a value above 0.

someone told me that no reverse on the transmission!! The transmission must need to take it out for repair!!

Early 4 matic cars!! The transmission should be different, which compares to regular W124 RWD.

$1000 for an bad transmission 4 matic... since little expensive.....because fixing a transmission may costs over $2500,.

Oh, didn't notice the 4 matic before.

Revised answer: Pass, unless you can get it cheap enough to make it a parts car, say $500 or less. Remember, with today's scrap steel prices, it's worth $200 at the crusher.

I bought a 1986 300E today and I love it. Great shape, but very dirty.

Car wash, armor-all, wax, etc.... that's cheap.

Enjoy, hope it cleans up nicely!

I have an '88 300E I'm in love with, just got it about a month ago. Funnest/most pleasurable car I've ever owned.

Is your car rusting at the jack holes? Mine is and I want to do something about it and looking for some ideas.
