it only has about 150,000 kms.. which is about 90,000 miles.

As you said, since it is a small island, the steering is used much more per mile. And also, as I was told by this local specialist, the dismal state of our roads puts a lot of pressure (& wear!) on the steering box. Our roads are full of potholes, and I imagine that he has a point.. all the shocks are transmitted to the steering box after all..

Also.. does anyone know if a W201 box will fit in a W123? I found one in the UK (good price) and I may buy it if it fits.. I know that they had auto play adjustment.. but am not sure if it fits in a W123.
