Transmission compatability
I have a 1985 Euro Coupe 230CE. The transmission is starting to act up. It is a number 123 270 52 01 722 401 02 223232.
I have found one that is a 123 270 76 722 416 02 170830. First, will this swap work with little or no hassle? Second, I've done an entire day's worth of research. I've discovered that the 722 401 of mine is the important number. Will the 722 416 work? What is the 416 vs. the 401. What do the different numbers mean specifically? All posts and internet data just say they are the auto identifier and are important for knowing how to set the modulator pressure. But what do they specifically mean? |

Better late than never.....
Hi
what did you found out about your problem of the transmission "722-416" are you still interested or do you still have the W123 230 CE ? I have to solve the same problem right now, but first I have to find this number on the transmission and everywhere in forum`s they are telling the number is very important, but nobody is telling where you can find it. Mine is a modell 1982 W123 230TE (Station waggon) and somebody need an automatic transmisson with the number were looking as well. Greetings H. Schrader (vivaschrader) |

Yes, I am still driving the 230 CE. The transmission slips between 2nd and 3rd gear, but as long as I go easy on it, it seems to be fine.

I always thought a 722.4__ would fit physically but the performance may be slightly different. I too have a 84 230ce and would be interested in any additional information if anyone put there has any.

Well if it is a good car and you enjoy it and plan to keep it, why not look for a complete change out for a four speed manual. Lots of that being done on the diesel side, and would work as well for gas engine cars. In the last month, maybe going on two months two complete set ups to a manual transmission swap were listed in the "For Sale" part of the Forum. There are quite a few around and mostly they are found in rusted out 240D and some Euro 300D models.
