check engine light and message center

97 E 320, 24K miles, original owner. Message center comes up with check engine electronics and check engine lite is on. Bring to dealer, he can't find any code that would describe where the problem is, or what to correct. Tech, cancels the check engine message and we drive away. Next day, bingo its on again. Went back, the tech did some service on that "hot wire" thingie in the intake track and canceles the messages again. Next day, its back. What gives with these messages. Car is running fine with lots of oil and water. Tech cannot find any codes to lead him to correcting the problem. Appreciate your advise. thanks, Mick

The 1997 M104 motors are having failure problems with the "hot-film" air mass sensors as are most other EFI fuel systems. The check engine code would be P0-170 for fuel trim malfunction. The part number is 000-094-10-48.

M.B.DOC is right.

It happened to my 1997 E320 as well. The dealer did it for free (the bill was someting like $800, parts and labor).

I've got a 96 E320 that just got the light. This car has 155k+ miles on it. Is it possible that this is the problem with mine or do you think that this would have been fixed by now?

My check engine light is on and I will bring it to the dealer tomorrow. It is 99 E430 with 41k miles. I wonder if it is the same problem.
