BENZ-LBG point well taken!!

To all you Benz techs it was never my intent to insult you or your profession. I have nothing but the highest respect for those that work on these amazing cars. I guess I put to much stock in my service advisor saying she (the 560) was good to go.

I've never had any of my past or present Mercedes leave me stranded so the thought of it happening to my daughter ticks me off. I hope all can understand that.

Once again sorry if I've offended any techs.

Until you know what the problem is it's premature and unreasonable to speculate on whether a technician could/should reasonable have identified the problem in advance. Until then I would go with the cell phone speakerphone diagnostic routine. This is what cell phone speakerphones are made for.

I'm having the car towed to the nearest Mercedes-Benz dealer in Acme, MI to have them tell me what's going on. Mercedes road side suggest that was the best thing since the road side techs are unable to do more than the basics. I just need to find a reasonable tow price. $150 seems a little pricey for a 35 minute drive one way.

When you go out to eat, do bring your own ham and eggs for the cook?

First, you ***** about how you spent $500 clams on a 20 year old car with God knows how many miles, and the shop should have told you that a mysterious noise was going to appear out of nowhere.

Now, the tow company wants too much money to tow your car.

I don't know what you do for a living, sir, but I will wager you don't let people negotiate your salary for you.

Paper pushers indeed.

You've managed to fit two bad analogies into one short post. The ham and eggs analogy relates to bringing your own parts into the repair shop - no relevance to the subject matter here. And rejecting a tow company quote has nothing whatsoever to do with negotiating a salary. Getting multiple competitive bids is entirely acceptable behavior in a free market economic system.

have them check the vertical links that join the rear sway bar to the wheel assemblies.one of these breaks[lots of weight in trunk]they have been known to grind on the inside of a rear wheel.

Hit the nail right on the head, I had the same thing happen to me, however mine sounds like it was less severe as I only heard the sound when I turned (body roll). They are dirt cheap and easy to install (with the right tools of course)

If you continue to drive on it it shouldn't harm the rim (i imagine you have stock 15 holer's on it) other than scraping the unside up. (nothing should get hot enough, nor wear through the metal of the wheel) You should be able take it slow and limp home at a reasonable highway speed (60-65). I hope the radio works gets loud.

If your daughter is still with the car, ask her (or a male friend) to climb under the rear end and look for anything touching the inside of the rim, or at the very least look for fresh scrape marks on the inside of it (shiny metal).

Im willing to bet the farm on this.

After reading the initial post, I was going to point out the same thing that David Poole just pointed out, because it happened to me. After the plastic piece snapped, it was scraping on the inside of the wheel and it sounded like something dragging. It was an easy fix. I should have replaced both sides at the same time, because a few weeks later, the other link snapped. I wasn't sure if the older cars used the same plastic suspension links as mine.
