1999 C230 Kompressor shifter problem

I have a 1999 C230 kompressor sedan, and the cat drives normal, but the shifter will not move from D to 4, I tried pulling on it, took the consol apart, but couldnt get into the gearbox, i could jst see the side of it where it's supposed to push in, but no movement.

Has anyone experienced this problem?

thanks in advance.

I had that problem with my E320 and I was told that the problem was definitely electrical because from P to D is mechanical and D to 1 is electrical. Well I changed my shifter and it now works perfect D to 1 but as I took the old shifter apart I saw that D to 1 I would consider also mechanical. Looking from the bottom the D to 4 change over is V shaped and there was blockage that prevented it from moving over. I have the old unit in my trunk and later today I could take pics if you like. Also I will be taking out my shifter again to change the link bushing so I could take pics of the removal to show you how easy. Granted we have different cars but looking at my wifes C230 I think the console and shifter removes similarly to my 210. I am no mechanic but with the proper tools and picture instructions it is a breeze. I did get a used unit because I was not willing to pay dealer price. Let me know if and what pics you want. You do have the option of leaving it alone if your tranny has no issues because how often do you need to use 4 3 2 1?
