OBD I diagnostic system-how to read it

RE: a 1995 E320, is there a brief tutorial someone can point me to on how to use/read the on-board computer fault codes that may be stored? I found the interface, but how do you activate it and where can I find what the codes mean? Thanks.

Wow!

That is thorough, thanks. I'm used to working on OBD II with a scan tool and Volvos with OBD I. Pre-1996 Volvos allow you to also read climate control/emission control/ABS/transmission/power seat issues etc. with just the device in the engine bay. MB pre-1996 only supply engine codes? What do you do if the ABS light is on? How do you know which is the suspect wheel? What about the transmission?
