1986 300E wont stay running smell rich
My 1986 300E will die in the middle of the street and not start for 5-10 minutes and then will run for 5 minutes and die, when trying to start it sounds like detonation and wont start, wait a while and it runs normal and then stops dead, I do notice that there is black carbon soot on the back bumper where the tail pipe is and it smell like it's running very rich, it was towed today, anyone know what this could be ? it's getting a good flow of gas to the pressure regulator I suspect an O2 sensor or the pressure regulator, does this car have a computer ? HELP

Jerry,
You've got a CIS injection system that does have a computer to regulate it. First thing is to get a set of gages on the FI unit and see what the pressures are. Also check the plate on the intake and see if it moves freely. there is an adjustment next to the plate, and there are several other possible problem points. Bad fuel distributor, warm up regulator, and the DP pressure regulator (Alzheimer's, can't think of the name) that attaches to the fuel distributor are all possible problem points. You've also checked the obvious, like the air filter? Jim

thanks Jim, I don't believe it's a pressure issue now because there is no in-between, it either runs fine or not at all, could it be a crank position sensor, each of the suspected items cost $160 each
Crank position sensor, Fuel Pump Relay, O2 Sensor, Can an O2 cause complete shutdown or just bad running and lastly where it he computer located on this 1986 300E

The computer
The computer is located behind the battery and covered with a heavy black plastic flap. The computer or read out is read under the lip of the driver side front fender, and I think it is the one with the silver colored cable going into it. I don't know who can read it. A good indy shop perhaps. Maybe only the stealer.
