New member of the 210 "burst evaporator club"...

Well, I think my evaporator has split as I have heard others have done... For some time now, I've had a small leak in the system somewhere but I wasn't sure where it was. Later, I read about the guy that did the great write up with pictures on removing the dash assembly to replace his evaporator.

I had been smelling an odd odor coming from the vents every morning and then put two and two together when I was adding a shot or r134 to the system to bring it back up to specs. When I released the remaining pressure in the can, I got a whiff of the same odor as I was smelling from the vents...

Looks like I have this job ahead of me. Is there anything I should go ahead and replace while I'm in there? My dash has a couple cracks in it - is it worth it to replace it or are they pretty costly?

Thanks.

I bet the dash is pretty costly I think I was quoted like 2 grand for a W126 dash from the dealer.

I don't know what it costs, but there is a factory tool to check the evaporator for leaks. It bolts on in place of the TXV and lets you charge the evaporator with pressurized nitrogen. Compressed air should work just as well. It is a lot less work to get to the TXV than to replace the evaporator.

So basically, the system needs to be unloaded to use the tool... Is it just a leakdown test? Where is the TXV anyway?

I'll probably wait to do anything until it's cooler outside.

Yes, the refrigerant must be reclaimed first. It is a leak-down test, but at a higher pressure than you'll ever see in use.

This is better than checking with vacuum both because of the higher pressure differential (vacuum can only be <15psi) and the direction of that differential (vacuum can help close up small gaps).

The TXV is roughly below the windshield wiper mechanism, and just to the left. Follow the suction pipe where it goes beside the brake booster, and it ends at the TXV. The wiper mechanism and water tray come out to access it.

Why not use a sniffer in the condensate drain?

No, not yet. I'm looking ahead to this project now since cooling season is just a few months away...

If I was any closer I'd love to lend a hand... I'm sure I'll be having to do this on our w210's eventually.

It looks like a horrendous PITA based on the wiki article... Right now, I have no heat (ruptured duo-valve) and no AC (leaky)

I watched it done on my friend's '93 500E - the whole front interior was removed. All of it - seats, steering, dash, center console, the whole thing down the bare metal. No way I'd want to tackle that job - cripes. $3500.

I had a local shop use a generic sniffer to verify that refrigerant was being lost through the evaporator in my '95 320.
Then I changed it out a few months ago. I re-did all the foam seals while it was apart. It's not a hard task; it is an extensive one.
