The car has 92 K miles on it and i plan on keeping it for a while.. that is a good idea. I do I need to get new pistons if I redo the heads? I am confused...

BTW.. the parts are hear and I just inspected them and found the replacement radiator to look kinda cheep. But the neck where my original broke, has reinforced metal rings I guess this is a known issue so with the redesigned unit, they have address this issue, not only on the return port, but on the delivery port as well.

What brand is the radiator? Did you inspect the coolant coming out of the old radiator along with the insides of the old hoses for oil contamination? Oil ruins the rubber hoses and they will fail in the near future if you have an oil in coolant situation. If you are confident that you don't have oil in your coolant, then replace the radiator and associated hoses.

No, you don't need to get new pistons. Your '91 300 CE with 92k miles sounds like a nice car. IF you DO have a defective head gasket causing oil in the coolant, then you should replace the head gasket NOW. You don't want to overheat the engine if you have another hose or radiator failure. Realistically, you are looking at a 3 to 4 day job. 1 day to remove the head, 2nd day to take the head to a machine shop and have it re-surfaced along with new valve guide seals and a valve job, and pick up new parts to complete the job. 3rd day to pick up head and start re-installation. 4th day to wrap it up and work out any issues.
And while you're in there, you should consider replacing the engine mounts if they haven't been replaced.

Marine, the head R&R is not too bad, but it's time-consuming to take off all the associated stuff. Plan on 8 hours maybe, just taking your time and getting it all right.
Above posts are correct; you should get a valve job and new seals while you have the head off; particularly a light head surface planing. That Al head has been cinched down on a cast iron block, scrubbing all around as the heat expansion coefficients are different. This is the root cauuse of the gasket failure, and a good flat, smooth head surface is the best defense against failure of the new gasket.

MARINE V, what was the resolution of this matter? Was it tranny oil or motor oil in the overflow? Was it corrected when you changed out the radiator. I spoke to someone who had a 92 300CE who had the same problem and he said it was tranny oil leaking into the overflow.

Edge,
Did you purchase the 300ce that you were looking at, the one with the questionable a/c? If so, how is it?

I flipped it. Too much to deal with, too many miles 177K, A/c, 2 rear windows not working, Becker stereo cutting in and out on the left speaker, gash in pass seat, clearcoat on sunroof gone, etc. I was going to keep it for my sons back from college to work summer jobs but it was easy to sell. But I love the E coupe, so much room in front with the long door and they ride a little lower, cruises beautifully on the highway, looking for one in better condition.

Clever, seems like a wise decision & I imagine you made a few $$ since the asking price seemed reasonable. On my 88 300ce, we had the indy install motor mounts & I replaced the oxygen sensor even though there was no ce light (no pun intended), and it purrs at speed and is quick as can be off a dead stop. Amazing for a car so old. And so comfortable too, as you said.

The craigslist Rhode Island seller lied to me about a few things on the car before I got there. He didn't tell me about the A/c, paint condition on top, rear windows not working and 177K miles. He said it was perfect and looked new with 125K miles, freakin' bastards. I picked it up and drove 150 miles home @75-80mph. I talked him down and only paid $1100 for it and the new buyer had a dead SAAB in their driveway and wanted a beater with some dignity so we both made out. But now I liked the coupe so much after driving it for a couple of days that if I find a decent one, I'll be an owner for longer. The E320 Coupes are nearly impossible to locate for a decent price so I'll probably settle for a 300E Coupe. If I can't get a decent one then maybe a 300TD. The wifey likes wagons.

Oh, I saw a c/l seller in riverside or greenwich, ct. selling a 1988 burgundy 300ce w/175k miles, asking $1700 I think, which I thought was the one you were after, so I did not pursue it. Well, on your deal everyone made out ok. They are great cars, but good ones are hard to find.

Just change the radiator and move on.. Check it in a day or two to see if oil has mixed in with the water or if water is in the oil. Changing heads and such is a little premature IMO.. use distilled water though cheap stuff at safeway.
