Cold Engine Miss in a 190E
After fixing the transmission in my newly aquired '84 190E I found it has several other issues. First off, I'm not sure where the Oil Pressure should run on this car. It has approx 200K on it. When first started up, the OP rises to maybe 2 bar if that. By the time it's hot and driven a bit ,its barely off the peg on the guage. Engine is very quiet except for an intermittant valve tap. That comes and goes at all engine speeds. Does the OP need to stay pegged on 3 bar like the diesels when it's running? Second, running highway speeds at about 70mph tach seems high at almost 3500-4000rpm. Seems high compared my diesels. Lastly when cold, it has a pronounced miss in #4 cylinder. After about 5 mins of driving the miss goes away on its own and is fine the rest of the day. Also, the idle seems to go up and down on its own especially when warm. Any tips would be appreciated. I kinda like this gas job!!!!

The rpm range sounds ok for that baby engine. The oil pressure, however, should be pegged by that time. At idle it can drop to below 1, especially hot, but it should come up quickly, and I think peg by 2-3K rpm. My old 190e had 160K, and it was basically pegged at anytime except waiting at stoplights.

Thanks. I'm going to try a new oil filter and oil this week. I'm thinking though if there was a serious problem with the oil pressure, I'd be hearing or experiencing some major problems by now. It's a mechanical guage and I'm not sure how accurate the guage is. Some one mentioned the 2000 rpm test with a known good guage. I'm going to get a known good guage and hook it up and see what hapens. Thanks for the info !!!!

My 190E has 3 bar while in motion, and drops to just over one while not in motion. 3500rpm gives me about 73mph, 3400ish for 70. Hopefully you are in a 2.3!

Thank you for the reply. That is about what my tach is reading, thought it was a little high, wasnt sure because of transmission problems at first with car. Yes, it's a 2.3, and it's got allot of pep for a 4 banger. I'm leaning towards a bad guage right now, only because the previous owner drove it this way till the trans went, and never had problems. I'll let everyone know how I make out with a more accurate oil pressure guage.

After doing some more checking, I got ambitious and pulled the engine so as to be able to get to the sump. Found screen clogged, and cleaned really well. Put fresh 15-40 weight oil in and filter and instant oil pressure. Now, she stays pegged at 3 bar all day long, and even at idle barely drops 2.5 bar.
Added a bottle of Chevron Techron to fuel, and the cold miss has gone away. Seems to be running better and better. Thank you for the all the replies,, this is a great site!! |
