He's just trying to be helpful, but oil preference - like car brand preference - can turn into a flame war. I plan on using AMSOIL's 10W-40 high protection syn in the beast I'm getting.

I believe Dee8go said that in jest. Any discussions pertaining to oil brand/weight/change interval in this forum always tend to elevate to an almost religious level.

Actually I was just passing on a good reference. Since I cannot find 10w40 Mobil 1 (except for the high mileage oil), I needed a reference to what grade to use in my FSS 119 engine. It looks like MB says the SM/CF or SL/CF, 229.5 or 229.3 rated oils are OK to run in the FSS 119 engine. Either 0w40 or 5w40 will replace the 15w40 or 10w40 Mobil 1 that they used to recommend.

I know "OIL WARS" can bring out the froth in everyone and I usually stay clear! I run Amsoil in my Harley and may switch to it in the MB
Now that I just changed the oil with 10w30 Mobil 1 Geeeesh

...and what is the thing with the fleece filter? Is this a diesel thingy?

Is your car FSS? If it is it's really the same engine as the non-FSS 1997. But I've always wondered about that - are the 98 and 99 119s and 104s FSS?

The '98 is FSS. I don't know the difference between the '97 & the '98 119.
When does a non-FSS 119 require an oil change? The FSS 119 states every 10K to 15K miles or 365-730 days. Mine resets to 10K miles. I change the oil (syn) every 5K-6K miles which is about every 9 months.

Bob, you can get the correct Mobil 1 product (0W40) at Walmart, Autozone, PepBoi, Advance Auto, etc. for around $6.50/qt. It does meet 229.5, of course.

If you have a brand new car or a fairly new mercedes i would use synethic oil such as Mobil 1.

For the older ones I would use conventional oil such as castrol.

Just an example lol dont take it so serious. Pretty straight foward if a car has been run on conventional oil then contiune with conventional oil. If it has been running on synthetic from day 1 then use synthetic oil.
