M103-hardened rockers w/old cam?

Hello all,

My 300TE (1988) recently developed a valve tapping noise, which I just determined was a worn rocker arm. The cam lobes all look fine, surprisingly, but the old-style rocker arm is garbage (the rocker next to it looks worn too, just not quite as bad). I installed a new-style rocker (with the hardened face) and the noise went away immediately.

To be thorough I'd like to next replace the rest of the old, worn rocker arms, but can I use the newer-style, hardened rockers with the original cam? Or do I need to find old-style replacement rockers? I would like to avoid the expense and hassle of replacing the cam. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Talk to the service manager or parts people at your local dealer. They would know.

I would think putting the hard rockers on would not be an issue.

I also would think that the cam at this point is suspect, though.

If you don't want to change the cam at present I would just do the rockers and realize that down the road the cam probably will need changing too.

Cam not suspect

The cam looks as-new; no scoring or visible wear.

What concerns me is that in the MBZ service manual it indicates that a hardened cam should be installed with the hardened followers. If I install the hardened followers, is it going to ruin my early cam in a matter of weeks? Are the old-style, softer followers available any more?

Any more thoughts out there?

Please chime in if you have any experience with this topic. Thanks

Since ONLY the special hardened rockers can be purchased from MB, they do approve that!

I would replace everything even though you really dont have to so everything wears evenly.
