Intermittently Stuck in Park

Have just found your forums so hoping you guys can help me. My 2002 S320 cdi intermittently gets stuck in park. Unlike similar problems I have read about on here and other forums, it's not everytime. I had the brake switch changed but still same problem. The dealership also told me that there were no fault codes recorded (they couldn't reproduce the problem). I've also noticed that when it's going to get stuck in P, the engine doesn't crank first time.

Any help/suggestions much appreciated.

Sounds like a bad ESM (electronic shift module) or a CAN issue.

Has anything ever been spilled on or in the shifter?

Also the ME and EZS control units can cause the no crank issue as well if one of them is not sending DAS enable signal.

Sure, you hook your SDS up and do a short test, just to be see if there is evidence in other modules that is important, such as CAN time out with ESM or EGS. You then monitor the ESM during the fault and see what it tells you.

Hi Steve & John
Thanks for your replies but not sure what these abreviations mean. The car has since been into my local MB dealer and had the shifter unit replaced but still has same problem. It's sticks in park about every other time I start the car - everytime this happens, I just wait, maybe a couple of minutes and miraculously I can then take it out of park fine.

They are still telling me that there are no fault codes recorded. They now want to change the ignition switch which is ordered.

Does this help you any? Would appreciate some explanations of the terminology you are using, although I'm mechanically competant I'm not familiar with the electronic terms used.

Thanks very much, your knowledge and assitance is appreciated.
Jace
