The post was directed to anyone who changes their NSS..and it should be in the Archieves as correct procedure.
But, Yeah...I always adjust mine b/c I am also Paranoid...the fear of Murphy's Law having my non-adjusted NSS finally leaving me stranded at 2 AM in a rain storm [ I believe that is the appropriate Murphy Law Time Window ] is enough fear for me to make the adjustment when I put the sw in. Nah..I adjust them at installation, regardless of Murphy....what's he know about NSS switches, anyway ????????????

![]() Ironically, alignment should be almost effortless at this point -- just loosen the NSS bolts and rotate the switch until it is correct. (The rod trick didn't work for me either.) But the replacement was a frustating experience, and I am not eager to interact with the switch again unless I absolutely have to.

Well, you certainly seem to know quite a bit about these switches. But what you don't know is that when holding the ign sw over to the start position while looking for a sweet spot on the NSS transfers all the current DRAW onto the NSS, where you don't want it. They want the NSS contact to be CLOSED and in full contact BEFORE the current draw of the starter circuit is initiaited. That way, it is the robost contactor bus bar of the ign switch that takes the spike and amp draw of the starter circuit.... not the contacts of the NSS...ever do any welding???? A good wat to kill a NSS. I leave you there . as there is an answer to justify everthing wrong. My preference is to do it corrctly from the get-go and to pass that info along in my diagnostic postings. To assume/state a mal-adjusted NSS, be it new or old, will not give you trouble is foolish info to be passing on.

I'm afraid you are taking this too seriously.
While what you say about the current draw is true, if, however, the car requires only a fingertip movement of the shifter to engage the NSS, that is no big deal. A more serious issue should obviously be addressed, but in my case it is not a serious issue. (It's just a car, after all. ) [QUOTE=Arthur Dalton;1959336] I leave you there . as there is an answer to justify everthing wrong. Just a car, and it is your car....so......do as you wish.
The cars I fix do not leave without being correct. While you can justify an improperly operating NSS that YOU installed as being No Big Deal, my bet is if you had a TECH do the same job and the install of the switch had the same results , you would be jumping up and down to Beat the Band with complaints of the repair. Regardless, my point to the reader is to install the sw correctly from the start..that's all. I watched all your post back when when you made a project out of yours and was quite surprised to see you have such a problem with such a simple repair... But if you can live with your NSS Sweet Spot , go for it til that day comes... ...and it will come. My concern is not your car..... it is the people who care to know how/why of a proper install.

As a paid expert, it would be his/her responsibility to do it correctly. But I am not an expert, and all of my car jobs, even minor ones, are "projects" as you noted. Most of the time, they are 100% successful, but once in a while, as with this NSS, they are not. (While it is a simple repair, I saw, when doing the reasearch for it back then, that numerous people had problems with it, so it is not always an easy repair.)It is obvious, and understood, what you were trying to communicate to DanielK and other readers about doing it right the first time. But since he was already past that point, and said "I have to move the shifter out of park and back into park for the car to start" I simply suggested he move it just to the bottom of park, and see what happens. My additional remark about having to find a new sweet spot is not standard procedure, but is precisely what a person would do in a jam -- especially if they remember posts like mine -- when installing it right the first time would not be an option, nor foremost on their minds. After that, they could go ahead and replace/realign the switch correctly. When mine fries, as you predict, I promise to post the news here so everyone can have a good, hearty laugh at my expense. Then I'll shell out another $25.00 for the part, and spend 30 minutes under the car, probably doing it wrong all over again.

Very Good...
I will close in this reminder to Members, and in particular to see that this important procedure Info gets into the Archieves..which is always my main concern. *FYI Note. NSS/Gear Shifter Alignment : "Be aware that after installation of this Electrical Switch, it is important to align the shift gate/shift rod/ and NSS in order to be assured of proper operation. Failure to do so can result in premature failure of the internal contacts of this Starting/Safety Interlock Switch . " A Dalton
