Inaccurate fuel gauge.... ran out of gas today!
I had a little mishap earlier. I recently bought a 300SEL, 1988. The seller told me that when the light came on to get fuel at once. Well, I left in the car and it was showing 1/4 tank, light was not on, but I was still planning on getting gas. I had no sooner got out on the road and when it hit 2K rpms, it started bogging down. I was like UT-OH! I eased off of the pedal and thought maybe it just needed to warm up more, despite it being 80° outside, not knowing the nature of the car. I got out on the main highway (I could see the gas station) and it cut out again at 2K rpms. I eased off of the side of the road and then she stalled. I had no fuel can, so I had to call my dad and he bought me 3 gallons of gas. Put it in and she started right up. I went on up to the station and put more gas in and all was well. I only put 7 gallons in, because I do not like gas from that particular store, so with 7 gallons, the gauge was on 1/2 and it occasionally flutters like ir occasionally did on my old 380. My 190D had perfectly smooth gauges, even fuel gauge was accurate and did not flicker at all.
What is likely the fuel gauge issue and is it an easy repair? Anyway after I got fuel, it was smooth sailing all the way. This car is a tank! Thanks! |

Most likely the sending unit, can check the resistance to verify
Removal of the rear seat back is required.
