1986 300E chassis serial number
I'm trying to figure out where this information is located. It's not in the owner's manual and it doesn't appear to be on the inside of the driver's side doorway. The only serial number I've seen in any of my paper work is shown simply as the last 6 digits of the VIN, which I'm sure isn't correct. Thoughts?

It is the last six digits of the VIN. Why are you sure it isn't correct? You should also have a VIN tag by the A pillar of the windshield.

Because the parts I'm shopping for list certain engine and chassis serial numbers that don't look anything like the last 6 digits of a VIN. I'm looking for some control arm bushings and some of the kits have "For models with chassis serial number through B711095" noted in their listings. I'm also going to need a new water pump soon and the listings I'm looking at say "For models with engine serial number from 10-018294 (M/T) and 12-268716 (A/T)." Neither of those serial numbers are part of my VIN (or any Mercedes VIN, best I can tell).

In that context it's the last 7 digits of the VIN. An 86 would be an A and therefore before Bxxxxxx. Number beginning with a 12- is an engine number which you need to find in order to shop for parts. The dealer can provide on a VMI or you can look it up by entering your VIN here - http://old.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng
