car slamming into gear!!

My car is slamming into gear all of a sudden. It used to jerk a little, but the other day I left it warming up and when I went back out leave the idle had not slowed. It was idling at around 1500 rpm's. When I put it in gear it slammed in reverse and drive. I drove it down the road and stopped. When I put it back in gear it did not jerk. Later in the day it done it again. Being that it always jerked a little I thought that it was transmission related. I posted a similiar post on Friday, but I only got one response. He said for me to check the idle control valve. Please help!! The car is a 1985 500sel. Thanks in advance.

My old 1985 380SE (probably the exact same tranny thats in your 500SEL) slammed into reverse if the engine was warm. There was also a delay in the engagement. I asked here about it and someone said it was something going out in my tranny. Strange, because otherwise the transmission shifted perfectly when driving. No slipping, flaring, etc. I never bothered with it and it never got worse. I just tried to shift into reverse as little as possible when it was warm/hot.

I just solved my car from slamming into gear due to high idle. I replaced the idle control valve. I think also if that is not it a bad OVP can cause a high idle, but if the car starts easily when cold, thats probably not the issue.

when i got my 420sel it had the same problem.i first replaced the idle control relay[in front of pass feet behind sloping panel held in by 10mm plastic nut].usually if idle speed is at 1500 it will be the relay and if it is at 1000 it will be the idle control valve.

Wow, is this just the season for ICV, ICU, and OVP related issues? I think this is the fourth post I've seen for this body type and this sort of problem during the last four days.

I'm seeing the same issue with my '85 380se. I got some great advice on a post I created about a week ago. My deepest fear is that the throttle position switch is broken which'd require me to get under that vacuum and fuel line mess on top to get it out.

Here's a question. Does anyone have the wiring diagram for the W126 ICU going through the OVP and the TPS and the ICV? I think that'd really help me and I'm sure many others to trace down potential trouble spots.

In fact, I think I'll post a thread requesting it.

After warmed up, my 85' 380SE would still slam into reverse, even at low idle. I had to shift into reverse without the brake depressed to it would not slam as bad.

Thanks to all.

I really need to know if the problem is the icv or the idle control relay. I read that I can clean or (soak) the icv. Is there a way to check the idle control relay. The icv is around 300.00 on fast lane. I haven't priced the idle control relay yet. I don't want to replace the wrong part. I haven't driven this car but 6000 miles over the past two years. Could this be contributing to the problem. The car has 132,00 miles on it. Thank you much.

for what it's worth...here's my 2 cents....my 1990 300TE was idling extremely poorly and the transmission was acting like a dick...not shifting out of 1st until around 3000 and then just jumping through 2nd into 3rd like an idiot. Extremely frustrating....replaced the coolant temp sensor and changed the plugs and the engine straightened up...then reset the tranny shift points back to factory specs and all is well....good luck
