C280 Possible transmission problem

Hello group, Just registered and new to this site.

I have a 98 c280 and just the other day while driving and coming to a traffic light I began hearing a loud noise coming from under the hood. I pulled over and open the hood the noise is coming from the engine belt area (if that’s what you call it) it squeaks and makes a loud noise. The vehicles performance has been for months sluggish. Just yesterday I am unable to put the vehicle into 4-3-2 over drive. The auto shift lets me to put it from park to drive and can’t go any further.

Anyone know whats wrong

On that car & all M112 motors from 1998-01, there was a recall for the front balancer assembly here in the USA.

thank you for that information. the balancer was replaced under the recall and it was under warrenty.

my problem was the idel pully that i just replace that was easy.

after readind up on the tension pully seems to have gone. i'm trying to read up on that topic and can't make head or tails from it.

If i'm able to move the tension right to left with my hands and its that free to move. does that mean its gone completly and needs to be replaced?

thank you eagerly waiting i'm working on the car now
