E320 wagon retractable cargo cover.

I have a 2004 E320 wagon with a electric motor operated vinal cargo cover that retracts when the rear deck lid goes up and then back when the deck goes down. It's a nice feature here in Arizona because it shades what ever you have in the cargo area. Problem is, it no longer works. Has anyone had one of these go out on them? If so how was it fixed, was it necessary to replace it and at what cost or can they be repaired? Any info will be appreciated before I go to Mercedes...Thanks, Desert.

The fix for your problem depends on the VIN#, and the part number/software version of the rear SAM. What are the last seven digits of your VIN#?

Hmmmmm.......some testing will be necessary. You'll need to determine if the compartment cover motor is getting power or not. It's easy to check, no tools required! The motor is located above the headliner, all the way in the rear, right in the center. Try this. Open the tailgate completely. Move the tailgate latch to the locked position (use a screwdriver), and wait until it locks. Then, place your hand up against the headliner in the area of the motor. Operate the tailgate handle with your other hand so that the latch pops open. If you feel a distinct movement from the area of the motor, it's getting power. If it's not getting power, you've probably got a problem with the rear SAM. If it is getting power, the cover could be stuck. If it's stuck, try removing the guide rails and re-installing them, tension-free.

E320 cargo cover

Thanks for the expert advise, I'll check it out after return from holiday at the kids. Even if I can't find the problem I'll have something to start with at Mercedes......Desert
