Is there a way to turn it off?

Try a search - the question has been posed many times on many MB forums. There's a difference between turning it off, i.e. disabling it so that it doesn't stop wheels spin, and nullifying the limp home mode. The latter doesn't seem to be possible - getting out of the limp home requires solving the problem that got you there.

I don't want to disable it permanently, just turn it off from the driver's seat when I want it off.

All of my other cars with "traction control" have an off switch for the driver to help get un-stuck etc., my early quattros even had an off switch for the ABS for faster stopping in some conditions. The 4matic kind of had an off switch, under the hood though, ... I'm not sure why Mercedes takes some control out of the hands of drivers, maybe they feel that there is too much liability or their drivers aren't smart enough to operate all of the cars' systems? Either way, I'd like to find a way to defeat or switch on/off.

I read something here a little while ago mentioning a "paperclip trick" or something like that, and searches have turned up either nothing or many threads that lead nowhere, I'll continue to search and read.

That was my experience too - trying to disable it permanently. People say "it's easy" and then you ask them how and they disappear. There was a company (Bergwerks?) that sold an ASR Defeat switch for about a thousand dollars, but they're out of business.

Thanks.

I'd like to turn it off without turning off the ABS simultaneously, together it looks easy. If I find anything, I'll be sure to post my findings.

Also let us know how it's easy to do both, and if it eliminates the limp home mode. If someone ever breaks the code on this I could consider buying another ASR car - they are incredible cheap.

Have you tried just pulling the relay wire going to the ABS pump? Thats what I did on my grandpa's 560sel in the snow and thats what I do to my e320 when I'm dyno tuning or racing. It does disable both the abs and asr/etc but of all the conditions I have driven through it only gets hairy in the snow or in the rain with crap tires.
