2000 E320 wagon wheel bearing replacement estimate
Trying to get a general idea of what it is going to cost me to fix my wheel bearing - front passenger side.
Also trying to understand how it "broke". I was driving on the interstate at about 70 mph and felt like I blew a tire. Any idea how it "broke"? |

who ever has done brakes for you only did part of the job or you opped out on the more expensive servicing and that includes re packing the front wheel bearing 2 sets on each side of the car plus the grease seals - if it spun to seized on the spindle than that is also a change item its now a pricy job 3 to 7 hundred maybe more -- jz

good point - same mechanic does all my services, so he probably won't admit it was his error. is there a way to prove that it was faulty work?

on an engine rebuild not having been charged for an oil pump that can happen BUT regular serviceing and thet fact that parts do wear out its a ????? plus finding another mechanic in the area to go to court against another is well u get that -- i would if you have had good luck with the guy in the past have him find a used spindel and swap it out my guess its wrecked i have been doing this all my life and it would not surprise me to find it siezed to be the problem and every or every other , brake pad replacement have them re pack the bearings its another 50 bucks or so but this wont happen again - jz

I don't recall seeing wheel bearing inspection, adjustment, or repacking in the maintenance schedule for the 210 chassis. I don't believe your mechanic skipped any steps, because the manufacturer doesn't specify that any maintenance is required. You can check this yourself, look at the required maintenance items in the back of the service booklet.

Breaks do not include wheel bearing service.

yea you guys are right the rotors get up to 8 / 900 degrees on a regular bases and the FOREVER grease you guy buy right next to the medical marijuana, keep believing that wheel bearings do not need to be serviced TRY telling that to the guy who works on your car BTW - jz

Modern materials and machining techiques have eliminated the need for periodic service of the front wheel bearings. There is no wheel bearing service item mentioned in my '95 E320 Maintenance Booklet.

While I'll agree that there is no "forever grease", wheel bearing service is not part of brake replacement for that model. It does not have captured hubs and removing the rotors doesn't require disassembly of the hubs. The synthetic grease that comes in the bearings from the factory can easily last well over 100k mi. They don't recommend a service interval b/c failure is very uncommon and is typicaly only dealt with once a problem arises.
