94 E420 Wiring Harness Repair DIY
Hi Guys, I wanted to make a quick post about my homemade wiring harness for my 94 E420.
My harness was completely toast, there was no insulation left on the wires. So I removed the original harness, grabbed some connectors from the junkyard. I layed out the harness on the floor and removed all the covering, I found that the insulation was ok within about 2 inches of the main connector. So wire by wire I soldered new 16 gauge wires then used heat shrink tubing to cover the joint 1 inch before and after. I made sure that the original wires were completely covered with heat shrink tubing so that even if the insulation continues to degrade its not going anywhere. It took me about 7 hours to complete and it cost about $25, there were about 75 soldered joints. I am very happy to report that after 500 miles its working very well, no new CEL's. Now this type of repair is clearly not for purists, and if i had the money i certainly would have purchased the correct part. but right now since i have more time than money it worked really well for me.
