Faulty gas gauge

I have a 2001 500 sl and the gas gauge shows 3/4 full when the tank is full and empty when the tank is half full. They replaced the sender today and the same thing is happening.

Perhaps the float itself is malfunctioning or stuck? Do these things even use floats in the tank?

Does this sounds as if the top and bottom are sucked in, due to a blocked vent?
