Just got a 500SEL Euro model and have no idea where to start!

I just purchased a 1986 500SEL euro model with 43,000 miles on it. The car has rarely been driven in the last 10 years. It seems to run perfectly but I really know nothing about these cars. I haven no maintenance records so I am wondering what I need to look for maintenance wise? I have heard that I should have the timing chain and guide replaced as a precaution. Is there anyway to tell if that is in fact the case? The car idles at around 750rpm.

Also are there any good DIY sites for repairing the following:
1. the sunroof seems to be off track
2. the back right lock does not work
3. the aftermarket Alpine stereo turns on but produces no sound

Thanks!

That car should have the double row cam timing chain. At that mileage if you can verify it it should be fine and for a good while yet.

Start with new fluids - everywhere - all of them should have broken down sufficiently by now. Then check the brakes because stopping is rather important. The timing chain may need to be redone, but you need to get the fluids and brakes up to par first.

Was this the one on E-bay from South Florida?

On the sunroof, you should be able to find plenty of posts to help you - just search.

The locks are vacuum operated. If the other locks work fine, that means your pump is OK, so start by looking for a kinked vacuum line to that door lock. You'll need to remove the door trim panel to get access.

I am helping a friend work on a 1989 500 SEL and it is also a eruo model. Her husband is away at war so I am trying to do my part. I think it is need of a Ignition Control Module. Does anyone have this part lying around for a euro model? I picked some up from the junk yard but notices that the conectors are different.

The wiper have also stopped working and I have not started looking at that yet.

Any help will do......

Ron

Here are pics: http://s629.photobucket.com/albums/uu16/foratlutfi/

I am selling it on Ebay, but if it doesn't sell I really want to fix it up and keep it for myself

Is there a simple or semi-simple way to find out how the timing chain and chain guide is?

Thanks for all your help everyone!

Looks like a nice car although in need of a bit of work. I saw it posted on one of the other forums.

Put some air in those tires Good luck with the sale.
