It's a marketing and distribution agreement. Mobil pays them to say that and to use the oil. If you went into McDonolds and asked for a recommendation on a soft drink, they would say Coke, because that is what they sell, but it does not follow that Pepsi is unfit for human consumption.

It has to be done from under the car. No need to drain the oil, you'll lose some but not much.

any special tools needed to pull the Oil Press sender?
I had planned to replace the starter anyway so I pulled it to give better accesibility and view. I can see the oil pressure sender but sure can't get a normal 17mm open end wrench on it.
Could anyone who has changed one of these shed some light on how they did it? I'm going to pick up some stubby wrenches and try that to start. Thanks.

From below with a stubby wrench, just a few drips of oil loss. I don't remember this being difficult, not much torque required so stubby wrench works just fine......
For what it's worth, I was getting low (but barely in spec per the manual) readings as well. After changing the sending unit, values returned to what I was used to seeing. I think these pressure transducers loose calibration prior to failing completely............... J. M. van Swaay

I've owned about 3 older Mercedes with the oil pressure gauge, and this is very common and normal. It really depends on temperature and how much you've been driving too. When my cars started out cold, oil pressure would peg on 3 then slowly go down to 1 then peg 3 when accelerating. No big deal they were all mechanically good cars.

follow-up
I waited a few thousand miles to follow up... just to be sure.
The sender was replaced with VDO unit. The car is still full of Mobil 1 0w40. The oil pressure is just fine at all temperatures now. The lowest it dips is just above 2 bar and that is at a stoplight right after interstate speeds. That is exactly how it used to read. Thanks to all for your help and feedback!

for my 190e 2.6 i also remembered my pressure to be at 3 while driving and around 1 when hot and sitting. After a while it started to stay at 2 while driving and never reaching 3 and went almost to 0 while in idle. I changed my oil, thinking the filter was plugged and voila. Now back at 3 and 1.
BTW i use synthetic also, so the sensor is reading it right. |
