190E transmission

I have a 1985 190E 2.3 automatic, which has recently developed a 3-4 upshift problem. I can get 200-400 rpm surge between 3 - 4 upshift at light throttle loads and a soft upshift at medium to full loads. Is this an adjustment problem, or is it time for a rebuild? 142,000 miles
