You just have to look deep inside your soul and decide whether you're capable of replacing the insert, assuming there is an insert available for a 99 S500, there may not be.

It is not if I can replace the insert. The question is does replacing the insert correct the problem or do you need to replace the whole unit? It is a matter of cost and I do not want to do it twice. Thanks MBD

Replacing the insert is sufficient except that I don't think 99 S500 has a replaceable insert. Where are you finding this part?

99% OF the time that does mean the MAF is at fault.

BTW...no such thing as a MAF insert for a MB from MB or Bosch.

Those inserts are from either China OR taken from a VW MAF, never use that on a MB!!
