Leak from side of transmission.

I have a leak on the side of the transmission in my 1988 300E. It is coming from a cap like disc (quite large), that has a raised portion that looks like it comes off with a screwdriver. Is there an o-ring that goes around this cap, that could be causing my leak. If so is it hard to replace?

This issue was addressed a few days ago. Look through the postings that far back(approx.)

The last leak I had experienced was coming from the transmission dip stick housing. There is an o-ring that fits around the bottom of the housing. The leak traveled and made it hard to find. New 0-ring and no more problems.

Wink

I borrowed a picture from www.transonline.com. The part that is leaking is circled. How do you remove this part while it is in the car? Does it just pop off?

BamaMan,

The 5mm hex bolt is really hard to remove because of the clearance between the cooling line and headers. I've got the same leak from the dipstick housing. How did you R&R the O-ring?

Thanks,

Jeff

Referring to the picture provided by Steve, can anyone tell me why the socket "MUST be Chrome"?

I'm assuming they specify chrome only to make sure you don't use an air tool on it. (Those sockets are black)?

Thank you for the reply but I have never seen a 12 point impact socket.

jfujimoto, to tell you the truth, my tech did it while I had the car up on his rack the other day. I had not noticed the problem until I installed the transmission back into the car. I do remember trying to figure out how to remove the housing while I had the engine/transmission out of the car but I did not see the little retainer bolt and just left the housing connected to the transmission. (it must be hidden very well). The tech had no problem from under the transmission as best I can remember.
