1989 Mercedes 300sel Transmission Whine
During the last snow storm, I ended up getting stuck a few times. It was late night and I wasn't sure if anyone would come around to help me, so I had to spin my wheels to free myself. Since that night, my transmission has been very loud (whine) at idle, even louder in reverse, but decreases with speed to the point that it becomes unnoticeable at around 3000-3500 rpm. Other than the bothersome noise (and it does shift kind of hard when going from park to drive or reverse, but has been since I bought the car) there are no other issues. I've checked the automatic transmission fluid and noticed it was dark with what appeared to be very fine metal. What is the probable cause, and how much will it cost to get fixed?

Metal in the fluid is not a good sign on any car. I guess you could change the fluid and filter first and see what happens, but sounds like something has broken inside of it.
 I think transmission rebuilds are costly on these cars. I am hoping the one in my '88 300SEL lasts awhile. So far it works perfectly. I am sure someone here will have more info. I am just the idiot here.

Our local shop will rebuild an older MB trans for about $950.....its really not that expensive.
Spinning your wheels in the snow shouldn't hurt the trans....I did that a ton this past winter in both my SD and our E....and both are fine....

That is a good deal! When I was looking at a 1986 560SEL with a bad transmission, the lowest price locally I could find for a rebuild was around $1700 and I called all of the local shops.
