Transmission Slip - '92 300E 2.6
Car has about 92K, so pretty low mileage on transmisson. Just bought it a couple of months ago and did a tranny fluid change because I noticed some hard shifting. The shifting seemed to get better after the change. Just yesterday (about 200 miles after tranny fluid change), I am driving and tranmission slips, probably when shifting between gears because I think I was going about 20 MPH when it happened (RPM's up, no engagement). I pull over because it seems like it just will not engage, check the fluid (which is OK), and then I get back in and drive several miles to the house with no further problems. Reverse always engages fine, but I do hear a bit of a whine when in reverse.
I have read of potential lower $ fixes that work for some problems: B2 piston, vacuum actuator, bowden cable adjustment, etc. Based on my symptoms, do you think it could be one of these, or anything short of a rebuild? I am really hoping so. Part of me says that with such low mileage, the whole tranny cannot be shot (hoping!). Thanks for any help you can provide. |

You need to determine if its flaring or actually slipping. The flaring seems to be a vacuum issue and is more like the the tranny is hunting for the gear rather than slipping or so I think.
I am having that exact problem on the 2-3 shift, however overall, the tranny seems to be working very well. I am about to swap the filter and fluid and debating whether I should replace the actuator in the process. So I will piggy back on your thread and see if we both can't get some clarity on the issue. I have a 88' 300SEL, guessing we have identical running gear.

If I understand flaring, it is when the rpms jump up momentarily as it shifts, but the shift is still made. Mine was more like a total slip or disengagement, where until I stopped and actually put it in park and then back in drive again, nothing was going to happen.
I think the 2.6 has a different tranmission than the 3.0 engines too, but I would guess they are pretty similar. |

After further research, I am going to do the spring replacement. I bought a new modulator as well but guessing the spring will do the most good.

try Lucas trans treatment, they helped lotsa folks. I find it helpful too, the oil & tranny are God send.
Even they had the same name Lucas Electric Prinz of darkness, was the sole culprit for the demise of all Engrish cars. Their Unions also rendered the demise faster.

I posted a new thread, but I swapped filter and fluid in the trans pan and replaced the spring set for the 2-3 shift flare and it works great now. Hope you have the same success.
