190e 5spd trans fluid leak

Have a strange leak on my 190e's 5spd manual trans. It appears to be coming from the rear drivers side of the transmission (cleaned it off and watched it leak down the side) I don't think it is coming from the rear seal, instead it is either coming from the speedo cable hole (which has a cable installed right now), or it is coming from a little cover held on by a 10 to 12mm bolt. Anyone know what this cover is for? I know nothing about transmissions so I don't want to pull it off without know what it is. Leak is pretty bad, about a quart a week.

The speedo drive can leak & does have a seal that can be replaced.

Possibly the vent is plugged.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will take a look at it this weekend. I am assuming that it should not leak with the cable removed if it is working right, correct?

tranny leak

generally when the tranny leaks in that given area, the main cause of the leak is the part underneath that area you described above. The is a small donut looking thing (can't remember what it's called) that is underneat that cover that you described above, where the tranny meets the drive line. Replace it and usually the tranny will stop leaking. Had this happen to several of mine. Cost of the part new is @$75.00. hopefully this helps.. it's worth a try
