Cold Start Injector?

I have noticed that my car (since I've had it) has always required me to give it some gas unless it is a hot start. If I don't, it will either just stall out immediately, or run real rough for about 15 seconds until all the injectors start hitting. Hot starts are no problem, it fires right up with no right foot.

Could this be a cold start injector not functioning? If so, how would I go about testing this? (1990 300SE W126 M103)

Thanks!!

Where do you live? I believe the cold start valve should only really make a big difference in cold climates.

Oh I see. Well, I live in Florida, so I guess I don't exactly live in a cold climate. So the cold start valve doesn't open up unless it's REALLY cold?

I think "cold start" means....engine not at or near operating temp starting up. I bet it is supposed to activate most of the time when starting the car with a not-warm motor...

That's what I would have thought. Anyone know for sure?

My motor starts fine every time - if it's warmed up. If not, I have to give a little gas, then it's just fine. Idles smooth, plenty of power.

Ours is the opposite. It will fire right up in a couple seconds cold, but is cranky when warm...it prefers you to begin cranking then give the pedal a small nudge....otherwise it sputters. It always starts....so I'm not complaining.

hi tp,

i just checked mine last weekend; engine was running rich and i thought the cold start injector was leaking; just unscrew it and stick it into a glass jar then start the engine (in your case cold engine); it should spray fuel for about 10-15 seconds after you first start it (might be shorter since it's warm in florida)...also you need to cover the hole the injector came out of since you're creating a huge vacuum leak, otherwise the engine will not start (but the injector should spray anyway)...hope this helps

Hey, thanks for the info. I'll give it a shot over the weekend. Since it is Florida, I'll probably need to let it sit overnight before doing this test. I'll post back how it went.....

Perhaps if the control voltage is 12V I can apply power to the thing and see if it will squirt.
