420SEL engine shocks
What exactly do those engine shocks do? Will I notice a difference in anything if I replace what might possibly be the originals?

I have been wondering the same thing... on my 560 with 300k kms I'm sure they're original... but at idling 750 rpms with the motor hot after a good drive I can feel the car slightly rocking as the motor turns over. The motor idles 100% smooth - no misfires. So I've been wondering if those shocks are worn out...

absorb vibration
just like you think they would - they also take the shock of the torque off the engine mounts a bit when you accelerate hard - if they are shot you might notice some more vibration at idle, but your engine mounts will wear out faster - that's a hard thing to gauge, so will it make a difference? sure. will you notice? probably not. I would replace them if I replaced the engine mounts or had the engine apart or had to remove them for some other fix.
