Unhappy Clicking Sound---Please Help

I drive a '95 C280. Lately I've been hearing a clicking sound coming from the pulleys (by the fan) every once in a while. Today however It started sounding more and more and it would also make a screeching sound from time to time. Could it be my water pump going bad?? Please help, I can't drive my car.

Thanks in advance

Harold

amg142,

Look near your belt tensioner. Does your car have a "little" shock absorber looking piece attached. My 1991 300E had the same symptoms and it turned out to be the dampner for the belt tensioner. Your best diagnostic tool will be a mechanics stethascope and touch it to everything until you hear the knocking the loudest.

Good luck

thanks for the reply, I'm gonna check it out today. I doubt it's the water pump, cause the car would overheat. If it's not belt tensioner thn i'm guessing it's probably a bearing..

My 1995 C 280 did the same thing and it was the engine damper. Also your clicking might be solenoids going on and off, I also had clicking sounds and it was solenoids.

If I remember correctly it`s on the side of the engine, but I`m not sure. It looks like a small shock absorber.
Solenoids are inessence switches that control another operation ie; A starter solenoid engages the starter motor when you turn the key.
