W124 - removing 2-pronged coolant temp sensor
Guys,
I want to remove the two-prong engine temp sensor because prior to closed loop operation the car has minimal power when the accelerator is pushed, and this job seems much easier than replacing the cold start valve (the problem is much worse in the cold weather). Since this is the last sensor on the head (closest to the firewall), and because of the alignment of the sides of the bolt I cannot get any grip with a wrench, It seems that to get a wrench on this sensor I must remove the valve cover gasket. Is this correct? Thanks. BTW, the car is an '87 300e. |
it only takes 10 minutes to remove the valve cover

Easier job but have you determined what the problem is ? |
Until closed loop operation when engine reaches operating temp, there is hesitation when depressing the accelerator. This weekend I thinned the mixture a bit instead of replacing the temp sensor and performance improved, so I fiddle with that instead. I'd rather do the easiest things first.

On an M103, that sensor can be a pain to get at without pulling the valve cover, but I have done it. You just have to find a deep socket with skinny enough wall. Order a new valve cover gasket if you take the cover off because they are prone to leak.

I tried the thinnest I have, but whoever installed it must have done so by taking off the valve cover, because one point on the sensor is virtually flush against the gasket-no room to slip a socket over it. Thanks anyway.
