W124 - removing 2-pronged coolant temp sensor

Guys,
I want to remove the two-prong engine temp sensor because prior to closed loop operation the car has minimal power when the accelerator is pushed, and this job seems much easier than replacing the cold start valve (the problem is much worse in the cold weather). Since this is the last sensor on the head (closest to the firewall), and because of the alignment of the sides of the bolt I cannot get any grip with a wrench, It seems that to get a wrench on this sensor I must remove the valve cover gasket. Is this correct? Thanks. BTW, the car is an '87 300e.
