'95 E420 Control Pressure Cable Replacement (Bowden Cable)
I thought I'd throw this post up for anyone that might be interested in replacing there Control Pressure cable. (aka: AT Kickdown Cable // Bowden Cable) The job took approx. 6 hours and was not an easy task to say the least. We accessed the unit via dropping the trans pan and the exhaust. This give you barely enough room to squeeze the unit out towards the front of the car. Be sure to check the fan clearance as you tilt the engine/trans down to ensure it doesn't hit/bind up on the shield.
A few notes/problem areas we encountered: Be sure to disengage the top locking clip on the unit before trying to remove it. It slides upward to release. You also have to disengage the hook/rod that connects the black modulator cylinder at the base of the control pressure unit to the valve assembly. (Black modulator cylinder pulls all of the way out of the control pressure unit and locks into place to aid in the reinstall...not as easy as it sounds though) Also, whatever you do, DON'T DROP the C-clip that holds the cable in place to the accelerator assembly in the engine compartment. (just below the ball joint). I did, obviously, and had to order a new one from Chicago which took a couple of days. In a nutshell, if the transmission was pulled from the car this job would take about 10 minutes, so I guess you'll have to do the math on what you feel would be the most economical solution for your skills and time. The new cable helped to smooth out my "tight" accelerator pedal problem a little bit and was good 'preventative' maintenance. Let me know if anyone has any questions!!
