Car will not idle.

Hello all, i fixed my high idle problem by replacing the warm up regulator. It seems that the broken regulator allowed the engine to idle at 1000 rpms without ever dropping, covering up a different problem! The new warm up regulator works great however when the car begins to idle down from warm up, it simply boggs down and stalls. The car runs great at all speeds except idle. Where should i start? fuel pump? Relay? fuel filter? spark plugs and wires? I need some direction!

Oh yeah, when the car stalls, it takes alot of cranking to get it going again. as if its fuel starved.

Thanks

Rory

Look for a vacuum leak. Had a similar issue with the 500SL many years ago, and one of the main vacuum lines had popped off.

try changing the coolant temp sensor, the most important one and see if that doesn't help...they are around $40...good luck

oops sorry. 1984 500SEL. Did discover a couple of leaks between the fuel distributor and the big rubber piece that leads to the lower manifold using carb fluid. Someone was in there and used gasket sealer very liberally. I have the fuel distributor off along with the rubber piece and am cleaning them accordingly. It should be back together this evening. My fingers are crossed!
